H. quattuorus has very specialized eating habits in primarily consuming seeds from P. foresus that happen to fall into the water. As food scarcity increased along with their numbers, some were forced to venture onto the shores of Zone F to find more seeds.

H. bullous is semi-aquatic, with a large bulbous shell for storing water to keep damp while it ventures out onto land. After eating, it must return to water to refill before it dries out.

Its ancestor, H. quattuorus, relied solely on its sense of taste to find food. Because this is less viable on land, H. bullous developed four minor tentacles to assist in exploration, each one tipped with taste buds. As it travels, it tastes around with its tentacles until it finds something to eat.
