Volantapiscus fugitatus

From OurFoodChain

These herbivorous protochyicthids descended from Hexapiscus herbimendus which have adapted to better withstand the pressures of predation. Like their ancestors, they feed on large aquatic polyphs underwater such as Taxonomum extensiensus and Taxonomum trifecta, and grow up to 15 centimeters in length.

Hexapiscus fugitatus have developed longer middle fins to enhance gliding above water to allow them to glide further and more quickly than their predatory relatives. Meanwhile, the front fins have become more stubby as they are not needed as high as a degree and the back fins have rotated downwards to stabilize the body while gliding. The body has also gradually developed a blue tint to act as camouflage against predators.

When being chased by a potential predator, Hexapiscus fugitatus will instinctively swim upwards headfirst towards the surface with its enlarged tail. Once having reached the surface, the tail will hit the water one last time and the body also uses abdominal muscles to propel itself forwards.
