Spotted Klod

From OurFoodChain

Pigma bluvus nearly went extinct with only a few individuals surviving due to issues capturing prey. One remaining population would develop some pigmentation that aids in prey capture, this led to a new species: Pigma prodota.

P. prodota reaches up to 20cm across and has splotches of astaxanthins that produce green coloration that attract swarming species of Foliumnympheus. The green splotches mimic a group of Foliumnympheus attracting more individuals, any that touch P. prodota will be stuck in an adhesive it produces. The mouth will bend around the body to envelop the prey.

Being planktonic meant some filter feeders will capture and feed on it, particularly smaller individuals. Their mimicry attracts predators of Foliumnympheus causing P. prodota to be predated by these as well.

P. prodota reproduces by splitting off a section of its own body that will become a new individual, this occurs approximately every 2 weeks in full sized individuals.
