Spheralgearous hostus

From OurFoodChain

Spheralgearous hostus is an Algeayan descended from Algearous greenensis. The strands now often wrap into a floating ball slowly growing larger over time as more strands wrap around and over older strands. The largest balls have a diameter around 30cm. Cells towards the center of the ball will die and the nutrients will be reused. S. hostus produces phycotoxins in low quantities as protection from predation.

S. hostus reproduces by fragmentation most often but can produce resistant form cells. If conditions become unfavorable S. hostus will start growing clusters of cells with thick cell walls to survive in unfavorable conditions. The resistant cells will remain attached until Spring or Summer seasons when there is plenty of sunlight. Once a resistant cell detaches it will begin reproducing and forming regular cells that will wrap into a new ball.
