Seed Chomping Moth Draksect

From OurFoodChain

Evolved from D. Mothus due to intraspecific competition started to feed on seeds from polyphs to avoid competition from other wyverns. To adapt to feeding on vegetation, they developed longer intestines and the teeth in the rear of the mouth have become somewhat blunter for eating seeds. They still eat small muscals species and will eat seeds to supplement my diet.

They feed on seeds of M. barreqhumus, M. coilus, M.longatumus, U. dicaulis, U. firmumsus, U. procerus, U. stellafrons, and U.sustensa. They also feed on small species such as D.arbora, D. brunus, D. purpurus, T. takydromus, R. subaquatica, and F. distringa. They are able to grow to a max size of 3 feet long and have a wingspan of 5.2 feet. They are nocturnal and fly long distances to feed on seeds or hunt. They are occasionally active during dusk and dawn to find mates or when they unable to find prey during the night. When sleeping during the day, dusk or dawn they are sometimes predated by D.tromerovenator and T. katharagnathus (only young).

They are able to fly for up to 2.5-3.5 hours. Males get a jet black or very dark green color with their crest, beard, and tail feathers being bright red, while females have a jet black or very dark green color with no bright red feathers. The frontal pattern on their wings has stripes with 2 large orange spots to give an intimidating appearance to predators and other D. herbimothus showing they are healthy and formidable. The eyes are tan yellow to mimic the eyespot patterns on the wings to make themselves look bigger to attackers. The coloration of the eye makes it more prominent and the eyespots are more effective at being reflections of their eyes.

When breeding during autumn males call to attract females during the dawn and dusk. When a female finds a male the ritual occurs on the ground. The male sways its antennae sometimes spreading its wings out to impress her even more while the male is also walking sideways around her, this display indicates the health of the male. When the female accepts his offering they will mate for life. Both parents build a nest on a tree and lay 4-7 eggs (only 2-5 survive). When the eggs hatch the female would raise their young while the male brings food until they are able to fly and fend for themselves which they would chase them off.
