Coronam retiarius
Coronam retiarius is descended from Coronam articulata. C. retiarius has adapted to living freely on the ocean’s surface without anchoring in substrate. The petioles have widened and are bowl-shaped to create more surface area to float with. The roots branch more often to create more surface area for nutrient uptake. As C. retiarius grows rhizomes will spread outwards with clusters of leaves forming when the rhizome branches.
A red flower will grow from old, large rhizomes infrequently and may grow unfertile due to the greater inconsistency in nutrients in the open ocean. If the flower is pollinated it will form a single seed that will be dropped into the ocean and grow. C. retiarius can also reproduce by fragmentation when a rhizome is broken.
