Members of Tenebrinatus blackensis would wash up on the islands of zone 8. Members that produced more organic antifreeze compounds were able to survive better and grow on the ice of Zone 8's islands. These populations led to Tenebrinatus calefaceus.

Tenebrinatus calefaceus grows slowly over the ice because it now has to produce more organic antifreeze compounds to survive. It secretes its purple pigment onto the ice and snow around heating up the ice and melting it to obtain water. It still photosynthetic as well. It obtains minerals from any soil it grows in contact with.

It can still reproduce by fragmentation but that typically only happens to parts that are in or near the ocean.
