Tenebrinatus blackensis

From OurFoodChain

This algae has adapted to cooler, less sunny climates. It has two main diferences with its ancestor: 1-It grows larger, and lies in the surface of the water covering it. 2-It has a new reproduction. The cells that divide float arround until they find a place with a bit of light and contact with the atmosphere. Then, they will attach to surrounding cells from the same species. Their coloration is due to them having a purple pigment that they secret arround them. This is a mechanism of absorbing extra light an transform it into heat. The mix of green clorophile and that other pigment ends looking dark grey.

To avoid freezing in cold climates, it produces an antifreeze compound from sugars it produces as well as salt it obtains from the waters it lives in.
