Some members of S. flagellata would get their flagella stuck as they swam and would be unable to swim. The inability to swim reduced energy use and still allowed for particulate matter to be caught in the microvilli. Over time individuals developed an anchor to remain sessile. These individuals led to S. collus.

Similar to its ancestor S. collus filter feeds using its microvilli to catch particulate matter and phagocytises it and reproduces through mitosis. The main difference is the sessile life style of S. collus. When a new individual is first produced it will swim with its flagella until it finds a suitable substrate and attaches to it at the end of its flagella. It can still wave around in the water if needed but mostly allows water to wash over it and bring it nutrients. They are still around 3μm.
