In the frigid north where the days are short, a population of M. stellafrons adapted further. Instead of only having leaves at the very top, it has extended its leaf-growing region to the entire trunk--allowing it to catch far more sunlight than its ancestor. Having more leaves also reduces the chances that all of them will be covered by snow, greatly increasing its reproductive odds as well as allowing it to retain its leaves for a little longer. Its trunk is thicker towards the bottom to better support the weight of its leaves and any snow buildup.

It is otherwise very similar to its ancestor, having a dark purple trunk and being able to reach heights of 130 feet. It sheds all of its leaves starting from the top in mid to late fall by cutting off circulation, and regrows them in early spring. Like its ancestor, once it is 5-7 years old it releases seeds periodically throughout the spring and summer and they germinate the following spring. They can grow 6-8 feet per year, the same speed as their ancestor as the extra energy cost from making more leaves and the energy benefit from more photosynthesis balanced out.
