This first crab, native to Zone 18 is an omnivore. It scurries along the bottom of the salt swamp, using its claws to snip at anything it can catch. This crabs diet mostly consists of carrion and A. Tasteyensis. This crab features specialized hooks on the rear legs. This allows them to hang onto roots in mangrove forests and swampy conditions. This crab is also known for burrowing. When this crab molts it will use the bottom of the palm to dig a burrow up to a meter deep to molt in. This crab spawns during the winter, and it’s larva develop in saltwater, then returning to brackish waters to become adults. As an adult, the crab is able to balance salt levels by excreting excess salt through special nodes under the eye, and is also able to keep salt within the body in freshwater conditions.
