Acutognathids are characterized by their needle-like facial protrusion that is made up of chitin. The needle evolved as a means for the basal ancestor to efficiently feed off of the juices from cockti, which were abundant and nutritional. Since the occurrence of the extinction event caused by the gamma ray bursts killed off potential competitors, they have opened up into other niches such as scavenging and carnivory.

Description[edit]

Acutognathids are Canetodes that have a chitinous pointed rostrum for sucking fluids.
