Acutognathids are characterized by their needle-like facial protrusion that is made up of chitin. The needle evolved as a means for the basal ancestor to efficiently feed off of the juices from cockti, which were abundant and nutritional.

Acutognathids are Canetodes that have a chitinous pointed rostrum for sucking fluids.
